Immersive Voice and Audio Service (IVAS) codec for mobile communications

The aim of this project was to develop new algorithms to improve the performance of IVAS codec for next generation of mobile communication systems that has been standardised by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).

The IDT researchers focused on improving the codec’s performance with new object-based coding scheme and error concealment and recovery mechanisms for mobile applications in 3D audio scenarios such as AR/VR, multi-party teleconference, and other multidimensional communications. Signals of interest included speech and music, in the form of multi-channel, First Order Ambisonics (FOA) and Higher Order Ambisonics (HOA) spatial, or audio objects (+metadata) inputs and also in the presence of different background audio/noise.

This was an 18-month research project funded by the industry and completed in early 2020.
