Compulsory Modules
Management & Decision-making (15 credits)
The module aims to examine the influence of behavioural economics on sports decision-making through case studies. It intends to demonstrate that there is both an 'art' as well as a 'science' to decision making.
The Sports Industry and Entrepreneurship (15 credits)
This module will examine the origins and development of the relationship between modern sports, commercialism, and entrepreneurship, and draw out the lessons for contemporary sports management.
Sport Governance, Law and Ethics (15 credits)
This module aims to: create an awareness of past and current issues in sports governance, law, and ethics giving a broad overview of the regulatory and governance structure of sport at local, regional, national and international level. The module aims to give students specialist insight into the challenges of governance in sport today and its legal and ethical ramifications, as well as the analytical skills to address them and provide new insights into old debates.
Leadership Models and Practices: Application to a Sport Context (15 credits)
The aims of this module are to deliver a thorough grounding in the main leadership models, and the issues that impact on leadership practice in the sport environment. It is intended as an introduction to leadership and will be the theoretical foundation upon which other sport leadership units are built.
Compulsory Modules
Sport and Globalisation (15 credits)
This module aims to: Equip students with a detailed knowledge of the process by which sport became globalised to help students understand the concept of globalisation and the expansion of sport around the world.
The Sporting Event (15 credits)
The module equips students with the critical skills to discuss and influence the future of the sporting event in an informed, enlightened and practical way.
Sport, Society and Equality (15 credits)
The aims of this module are to explore how Sport both reflects and influences social attitudes and behaviours, raising fundamental questions about equality, while nevertheless promoting elite performance and status. The module equips students to think critically about issues such as equal pay, sexism, racism, homophobia and LGBT discrimination, and disability, and the way in which clear understanding of such issues relates to the workplace and employability.
Critical Reflective Leadership and Sport Management (15 credits)
The aims of this module are to create an awareness of how critical reflection can facilitate improved leadership and personal growth in sport management practice.
Dissertation (60 credits)
The aims of this module are to give the student the opportunity to study a subject, business problem or research question in depth and to research the issues surrounding the subject or background to the problem.
The module will equip the student with the relevant skills, knowledge and understanding to embark on their individual research project and they will be guided through the three options available to them to complete their dissertation:
- A desk based research project that could be set by an organisation or could be a subject of the student's choice
- A project that involves collection of primary data from within an organisation or based on lab and/or field experiments
- A full professional placement within an organisation during which time they will complete a project as part of their role in agreement with the organisation (subject to a suitable placement position being obtained).
Students will achieve a high level of understanding in the subject area and produce a written thesis or project report which will discuss this research in depth and with rigour.
