Dr Merve Sancak, Lecturer at the Institute for International Management, had the pleasure of being invited as a plenary speaker to the International Research Conference on Skills for a Just Transition: Skill Formation, Industrial Transformation, and Job Creation for Sustainable, Just and Inclusive Economies. The conference was organised by Centre for Researching Education and Labour (REAL), University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the Zurich University of Teacher Education (PHZH). It focused on questions around skill formation, industrial transformation, and job creation for sustainable, just and inclusive economies in low and middle-income countries. The participants included the academics, representatives of governments, industry, workers and the civil society, civil servants, and international organisations from 14 countries across four continents.

Dr Merve Sancak shared her research on skill formation systems of Mexico and Turkey in the closing plenary panel. Her presentation focused on the role of the state in shaping the skill system institutions, which was based on her 10-year research on the two countries’ skill formation systems, and particularly her book and research articles about the impact of political coalitions on vocational education systems and national qualifications frameworks.
