In this talk, Ángel Barbas will share the progress of an ongoing research project that aims to study the contribution of alternative media to media literacy in a variety of cultural and geographical contexts. First, the results of a systematic literature review will be presented; research gaps and challenges identified during the process will be be addressed. In the third section of the talk, he will introduce preliminary results of fieldwork carried out on a sample of alternative media in Spain, the UK, Africa and the Middle East. Finally, future lines of research in the fields of communication and education will be outlined.

About the Speaker:

Ángel Barbas is Lecturer at Teoría de la Educación y Pedagogía Social department of the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED) from Madrid, Spain. His research interests include the educational dimension of social movements, activist media practices, and alternative media as socio-educational agents. He has been a research fellow at The University of Texas in Austin, RMIT University of Melbourne, Loughborough University London, and Cardiff University. He has also been a visiting professor at the Universidad Manuela Beltrán of Colombia and the Universidade de São Paulo of Brazil. He is a co-founder of the Red de Investigación en Comunicación Comunitaria, Alternativa y Participativa (RICCAP). His most recent paper, co-aurthored with Dr Emiliano Treré, has been published in the Social Movement Studies Journal (Barbas & Treré, 2023).
