Micro internship with Bua Fit sport tech - case study by Komal Ghai
Komal Ghai studied the MSc Sport Business and Innovation and completed a Future Space micro internship while at Loughborough University London. Graduating in 2021, Komal shares how the experience shaped her career and professional development. Komal is now Client Solutions Manager at IMG.
The micro internship experience
During my micro internship at Loughborough University London, I had the opportunity to work with a sport tech start-up called Bua Fit for two months. This experience, particularly within a fast-paced startup in the sports industry, allowed me to develop a range of valuable skills. I became adept at problem-solving and time management, particularly in high-pressure situations. Working alongside another intern was also essential in enhancing my teamwork and collaboration abilities, as we often tackled similar projects together.
In addition to these core skills, I gained hands-on experience in the media field, where I was encouraged to think creatively. I also learned to be critical when conducting research and presenting findings, particularly when engaging with potential clients. This exposure helped me build stronger client relationship management skills. Overall, the internship provided a solid foundation for my current role as a Client Solutions Manager at IMG Media.
Impact on career progression
My time at Bua Fit provided valuable insight into the various sectors of the sports industry in London. Through this internship, I gained confidence in my abilities and developed a clearer understanding of the skills needed to succeed in this field. It also helped me identify what I truly wanted to pursue in my career.
After completing the Bua Fit internship, I was fortunate to be offered a paid internship at BT Sport (now Warner Bros. Discovery), which was advertised exclusively to Loughborough London students. During my time there as an Internal Communications Intern, I was able to expand my network and skill set. This experience led to an opportunity to transition into a full-time role within BT’s Production team for BT Events, where I continued to grow professionally.
Support from the Future Space Team
The Future Space team was incredibly supportive throughout my time at Loughborough University London. They were always available to assist with various aspects of my career journey. They helped me identify internship opportunities, particularly those available for international students, and provided valuable advice on how to tailor my CV. The team also offered interview preparation sessions, which were especially helpful before my interviews at BT Sport. Furthermore, as I needed a Tier 2 Sponsored visa to work in the UK, the Future Space team organized sessions with immigration consultants, ensuring I understood the visa process and knew which companies could sponsor my work permit.
Navigating internships as an international student
As an international student, I didn't face any significant barriers when applying for internships. I was able to apply for and work with any company, just like any other British student. The process was straightforward, and the support from the Future Space team made it even easier.
Why I recommend Future Space micro internships
I would highly recommend a Future Space micro-internship to other international students. These internships are a fantastic way to understand the job market and learn what companies expect from potential employees. They also provide valuable insights into the types of roles available and the kinds of companies that are hiring. Beyond gaining practical experience, these internships are a great opportunity to connect with classmates who may become future colleagues or professional contacts in the sports industry.
Tips for other international students
My advice would be to step out of your comfort zone and explore a variety of roles and industries. Even if a position is outside your usual area of interest, it can help you develop a broader skill set, which will make your CV more diverse and appealing. Also, if you're interested in extending your time with a company after the internship, make sure to express your interest clearly. Senior executives appreciate students who show initiative and proactivity, and in my experience, this can often lead to further opportunities.
