Renting private accommodation

This page provides guidance on finding accommodation, support available throughout your tenancy, and advice to help you rent with confidence as you move to London.

To support your accommodation search, we have included a selection of accommodation providers and directories as well as resources to help you with your decision making and understanding your legal rights and responsibilities.

Please note that all providers operate independently of the University. We strongly encourage students to carry out thorough research and carefully review all terms and conditions before entering into any rental agreement.

The Renters’ Rights Act has introduced changes to how private renting works in the UK. Find out how it may affect private renting for students.

Finding accommodation in London

You may find it useful to use online accommodation search directories to explore what is available and compare different options.

You can also use the London Rents Map, which shows average monthly private rental prices for different types of homes across London. The map is updated monthly, making it a reliable resource to help you estimate costs and plan your budget. Below, you will find a list of private accommodation directories and search tools:

  • Student.com – A global student accommodation booking platform that lists purpose-built student residences and private halls. It allows you to compare verified student properties in different cities, including London, and book rooms directly through the site.
  • SpareRoom – A UK-wide room rental platform focused mainly on flatshares and house shares. It is commonly used to find a room in a shared house or live with other tenants rather than in dedicated student accommodation buildings.
  • AmberStudent – An international student housing platform that specialises in booking purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA). It offers shortlisting support and booking assistance, often acting as a middle platform between students and accommodation providers.
  • London Student Pad – A UK student-focused accommodation search tool that helps students find private rented housing and student lets in London. It often includes listings from landlords and letting agents rather than large student accommodation providers.

Exploring accommodation options

Our Student Services team has compiled a directory of private accommodation providers, including student housing, family-friendly options, and short-term stays across London. As these providers operate independently of the University, we recommend researching thoroughly before signing any rental agreement.
