Monika Brusenbauch Meislová was appointed in 2025 as Visiting Fellow at the Institute for Diplomacy and International Affairs at Loughborough University. Monika is an Associate Professor at the Department of International Relations and European Studies at Masaryk University in Brno (Czech Republic), where she directs the Master’s programme in European Studies. She holds Jean Monnet Chair in EU Digital Diplomacy and a Visiting Professorship at Aston University in Birmingham (United Kingdom). Her additional roles include an Associate Membership of the Centre for Research on English-Speaking World (CREW) at Sorbonne Nouvelle University in Paris and membership of the Scientific Council of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Monika’s research focuses on political discourse, legitimacy, and EU–UK relations. She also holds several prominent editorial appointments: Associate Editor of the Journal of International Relations and Development (Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature), and Editor of the Contemporary European Studies book series at Routledge. In addition, she serves on the Editorial Committee of the Journal of Contemporary European Studies (Routledge, Taylor & Francis) and on the Editorial Advisory Board of British Politics (Palgrave Macmillan).
Alongside her publishing and editorial work, she is actively involved in several national and international research projects, both as principal investigator and work package leader.
She also contributes extensively to high-profile public and policy outreach, offering expert commentary in Czech and international media and writing for leading policy platforms such as the Oxford University Blog and LSE Blogs. A sought-after speaker, she has been repeatedly invited to deliver talks, for instance, at the British Parliament, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, and numerous academic and policy events across Europe and beyond.
Research
Monika’s research focuses on political discourse, legitimacy, and EU–UK relations, with a particular interest in the communicative dimensions of diplomacy and European integration. Her work has been regularly published in leading international journals, including International Affairs, the Journal of European Public Policy, the Journal of Common Market Studies, the British Journal of Politics and International Relations, European Security, and British Politics.
She has been involved in many national and international research projects, serving both as principal investigator and work package leader. In 2024, she was awarded the Jean Monnet Chair in EU Digial Diplomacy by the European Commission. She is also principal investigator of a project funded by the Czech Science Foundation and work package leader within the OP JAK INTERFER project.
Her research excellence has been recognised through multiple awards and distinctions.
Teaching
Monika has developed and delivered a broad portfolio of courses on diplomacy and digital diplomacy, British EU policy, and EU–UK relations. She also teaches across modules on EU policies, theory of European integration, the history of European integration, and research methods.
Her teaching approach combines conceptual rigour with practice-oriented and interactive methods, fostering critical thinking and helping students bridge the conceptual and empirical dimensions of European and international politics.
