Profile
Dr Yamamoto is a Professor of Epistemology and Communication Theories. Since 2014, he has been the leader of the research group Studies on Communication and Biopolitics (LaBBio/Unicentro), which carries out theoretical research and pragmatics experiments in favour of marginalized and vulnerable groups in Brazil.
Between 2015 and 2018, he received investment from the Brazilian government to lead cinema teaching in primary and secondary schools on the outskirts of Guarapuava (PR, Brazil).
Dr Yamamoto is an author of books and articles on modern communication as a population control dispositive and on forms to resist them.
Academic background
Dr Yamamoto has a degree in Journalism (UEL, 2004) and a Ph.D. in Communication (UFRJ, 2013). In 2007, the Brazilian Society for Interdisciplinary Communications Studies (Intercom) awarded him the best monograph of the year.
Early in his career, he worked as a journalist and took on various roles as a radio and TV journalism director. Since 2013 he has been dedicated to university activities as a professor and researcher at the Midwest State University (Unicentro, Brazil). He was Visiting Professor at Scuola Normale Superiore (Italy, 2017-2018) and the State University of Londrina (Brazil, 2020-2024).
Research
Current research and collaborations
Dr Yamamoto has extensively researched modern communication (media) as a population control dispositive. His current research develops along two main axes:
- An investigation into the historical events that gave rise to modern communication (genealogy of communication)
- A study on contemporary forms of resistance (community cinema). His recent books are related to these themes: Community and Communication 1 – the crisis of the common (Appris, 2017); Community and Communication 2 – essay on Being-With (Appris, 2020) and Biopower and Communication (CRV, 2022).
Since 2021, he has been deputy coordinator of the Communication Epistemology Working Group of the National Association of Graduate Programs in Communication (Compós).
