PhD research
Fatima's research titled ‘Institutionalized racial bias against immigrants in the UK: analysis of immigration policies, immigration experiences and Magistrates’ courts decisions’, explores drivers behind intensification of racialised sentiments and biased behaviour toward immigrants in contemporary Britain by analysing the historical development of the immigration regime.
Analysis of policies adopted since the end of the WWII shows a gradual transformation of the perception of a "desired"/"favourable" immigrant, reflecting the changes in British identity and threat perceptions existing within the society, which affected the direction and subject of immigration regulation. Differences in treatments of various groups of immigrants, depending on their immigration status, country of origin and personal characteristics are going to be further studied based on large empirical sources, including immigrants' stories of moving over to the UK and settlement experience, and the way immigrant cases are processed by local courts.
