PhD research
Many studies have explored the effects of trade and economic competition between states, examining how this competition reshapes geopolitics and international relations. Arbnor’s research titled ‘High-Tech Development in the Era of Re-Globalisation and the Role of Institutions, Political Alignment and Global Value Chain Transformation’, highlights the central role of high-tech advancement and access to critical resources. Given the global economy's interconnectedness and deep integration of Global Value Chains (GVCs), complete decoupling is unrealistic. Leaders are now focussing on de-risking strategies. This has led to new concepts like multi-alignment and friend-shoring attempting to explain the ongoing competition for dominance in GVCs, access to critical resources, and technological superiority.
Strategic decisions by states often aim to limit technological transfer and restrict access to critical resources from global rivals. As the global order reshapes, dominating GVCs appears to be a critical factor in countries' new positioning on the world stage. What are the strategies that countries use in this race and what are the theoretical frameworks that can explain the phenomena is the initial phase of this research project.
