Students volunteering at the London Marathon 2026

Around 40 students from Loughborough University London volunteered at the finish line of this year’s London Marathon, gaining first-hand experience of one of the world’s most iconic mass participation events.

Positioned at a pivotal point of the race, students witnessed history as the event saw its first ever sub-two-hour marathon performance, adding a unique and memorable dimension to their involvement.

Volunteering at the finish line offered students the opportunity to contribute to the Marathon’s ongoing sustainability efforts, supporting initiatives designed to manage waste, improve resource efficiency, and enhance the overall environmental performance of the event. By working within a live, large-scale sporting environment, students gained a practical insight into operational sustainability and the complexities involved in delivering major global events.

In addition to supporting sustainability initiatives, students played an important role in assisting participants and their supporters as runners completed the race. This included providing guidance, reassurance, and practical support during a key moment of the marathon experience. Opportunities such as this form a central part of the Loughborough University London student experience, enabling learners to build professional networks, enhance their employability, and gain valuable, real-world experience alongside their studies.

Future Space ambassador and lead volunteer for the group, Jackson Stachnik, shared this of his experience:

“It was an incredible experience to be part of such an iconic event. The atmosphere at the finish line was something you can’t really replicate, and to witness a historic sub-two-hour marathon made the day even more special. Working alongside fellow Loughborough University London students and a wider team of volunteers created a real sense of shared purpose, and it was great to build connections in such a fast-paced environment. I’m really grateful to the London Marathon organisers for giving us the opportunity to be involved, and to Future Space for connecting us with this opportunity. Supporting both the sustainability initiatives and the runners crossing the line gave me a genuine insight into how an event of this scale operates behind the scenes. It’s one thing to study events, but being there on the ground brings a completely different perspective.”
