Connecting students to its local area has always been a core activity at Loughborough University London. A new partnership will see opportunities created for students to connect and experience local culture, creativity and events as well as take on projects that support the local community.

The Wick magazine is a joint venture between Creative Wick, an independent non-profit, social enterprise, Community Interest Company that was established in 2010 to help preserve Hackney Wick and Fish Island as a permanent, sustainable creative cluster and The Local Content Company, a hyper-local media specialist. The area in and around Loughborough University London's campus has a rich history of enterprise, creativity and culture and once had more artists per square metre than anywhere in Europe. The new partnership will be symbiotic in developing and connecting the Loughborough campus to its locality.

Central to the partnership is the opportunities for students. Both organisations have already offered internships, Collaborative Projects and Collaborative Dissertations for students to research and gain experience in and around culture and creativity in Hackney Wick. The partnership will see these opportunities increase alongside chances for students to be commissioned to write for the Wick newspaper, be taken on local orientation tours and connect with local businesses, creatives and cultural spaces that make Hackney Wick so vibrant and energising.

Creative Wick was the brainchild of Loughborough University London PhD graduate, William Chamberlain, who said of the partnership:

It has been inspiring to see how much Loughborough has invested in Hackney Wick over the past decade. This new partnership will give further opportunities for students and staff to support local businesses, culture and creativity whilst gaining valuable real-world experience.  It’s the sort of win, win opportunity we are looking to replicate with other universities and organisations in the local area.
