A Genealogy of Governance: Talk by Professor Mark Bevir

  • 20 May 2026
  • 12.30pm - 2pm
  • Room LDN1.04, Loughborough University London

Professor Mark Bevir (University of California, Berkeley) will deliver a talk titled A Genealogy of Governance. A Professor of Political Science at Berkeley, Bevir is a leading figure at the intersection of political theory, interpretive social science, and the history of ideas, widely recognised for his work on the concept of governance.

His influential publications, including Democratic Governance (Princeton, 2010), A Theory of Governance (UC Press, 2013), and Governance: A Very Short Introduction (Oxford, 2012), have reshaped how scholars understand the state and its evolving forms.

In this lecture, Bevir will present a genealogical account of governance, tracing how its dominant rationalities and practices have developed, transformed, and been contested over time. This talk will be particularly valuable for those interested in public policy, political theory, international governance, critical social science, and the history of political thought.

The lecture will also be broadcast online.
