Why I chose Loughborough University London

After several years working in banking, I realised that the future of financial services would increasingly be driven by technology, data and digital innovation. I wanted to gain the knowledge and skills needed to contribute meaningfully to that transformation.
Loughborough University London stood out because of its excellent academic reputation, industry-focused teaching and its location in London's financial and technology hub. I was particularly attracted by the practical nature of the programme and the opportunity to learn from academics and industry professionals while studying alongside students from different countries and professional backgrounds.

Academic and careers support

My academic experience was both challenging and rewarding. The programme encouraged critical thinking, teamwork and practical problem-solving rather than simply learning theory. Every module challenged me to think differently and apply knowledge to real business situations. The lecturers were approachable and supportive, always encouraging us to ask questions and think creatively. Studying with classmates from different cultures and industries also broadened my perspective and helped me appreciate different approaches to solving complex problems.

The programme encouraged critical thinking, teamwork and practical problem-solving rather than simply learning theory. Through modules such as Finance Principles and Grand Challenges, I developed stronger analytical, research and decision-making skills. One of the highlights was collaborating with students from diverse backgrounds on a project addressing Sustainable Development, where we developed practical solutions to improve infrastructure resilience using evidence-based analysis and digital technologies.

Aspects of my course that I enjoyed

I particularly enjoyed learning about digital financial services, fintech innovation, data analysis and how technology is reshaping financial institutions. The practical assignments and real-world case studies helped bridge the gap between academic theory and professional practice.

One of the most valuable aspects of the programme was my dissertation, which examined the regulation of digital finance in Uganda and Kenya, focusing on how policymakers can balance innovation, security and financial inclusion. Conducting this research strengthened my ability to critically evaluate regulatory frameworks, analyse policy issues and develop evidence-based recommendations for emerging financial markets. The course also strengthened my analytical thinking, research skills and ability to evaluate complex financial and technological challenges. These are skills I will continue to use in my professional life going forward.

Highlights of my time at Loughborough University London

One of the biggest highlights was meeting students from many different countries and cultures. Working together on projects and participating in university events helped me develop lifelong friendships and expand my professional network.
Living and studying in London was another unforgettable experience. Being surrounded by one of the world's leading financial centres exposed me to new ideas, cultures and professional opportunities that enriched both my personal and professional development.

The Global Impact Scholarship also made my postgraduate studies possible by reducing the financial burden of studying abroad. It allowed me to focus fully on my academic work instead of constantly worrying about finances. More importantly, it enabled me to pursue the ambitions I had described in my scholarship application. It gave me access to outstanding teaching, networking opportunities and a diverse learning environment that challenged me academically and professionally. The scholarship was not simply financial assistance; it was an investment in my future and motivated me to work even harder throughout my studies.

How Loughborough University London has prepared me for my future career

My time at Loughborough University London equipped me with both technical expertise and transferable skills that continue to shape my professional journey. The Digital Finance programme strengthened my analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, communication skills and confidence in using data and technology to support informed decision-making. My dissertation on digital finance regulation in Uganda and Kenya further strengthened my research, policy analysis and problem-solving skills, reinforcing my ambition to contribute to the development of secure, innovative and inclusive financial systems in Africa.

At present, I work as a Recovery Worker at Hestia, where I support individuals experiencing mental health challenges and complex needs. Although this role is outside my original professional background in banking and financial services, it has enabled me to develop valuable skills in risk assessment, communication, teamwork and working with people from diverse backgrounds. It has also strengthened my resilience, adaptability and ability to make sound decisions in complex situations.

At the same time, I remain committed to pursuing a career that aligns with my academic background and professional experience in digital finance, credit risk and portfolio management. I am actively seeking opportunities where I can apply the knowledge and skills I gained through my postgraduate studies, together with my previous banking experience, to contribute to innovation and effective decision-making within the financial services sector. I am confident that my education at Loughborough has prepared me well for those opportunities by giving me both the technical expertise and the adaptability needed to succeed in today's evolving workplace.

My advice to current and future students

My advice would be to approach your postgraduate studies with an open mind, a willingness to learn and a clear sense of purpose. Make the most of every opportunity the university offers, engage with your lecturers, collaborate with classmates from different backgrounds, attend networking events and make full use of the careers service. The relationships you build and the experiences you gain outside the classroom can be just as valuable as your academic studies.

I would also encourage students to be patient and resilient as they build their careers. Your first role after graduation may not always be your ideal position, but every experience helps you develop professionally and personally. Continue investing in your skills, remain adaptable and stay focused on your long-term goals. The knowledge, confidence and transferable skills you gain at Loughborough University will prepare you for opportunities across different industries and will help you make a meaningful contribution wherever your career takes you.
