Why I chose Loughborough University London
I was looking do a master’s degree in London, so the location was quite important to me. Loughborough University London also has a particularly strong focus on offering the students skills which are relevant to the corporate world. Realistically students go to university to find a job afterwards, so a university which takes that into account and equips students with the necessary skills to not only land a job but also find success in their roles after university is invaluable.
The campus is compact and has everything you need, you can use many of the rooms and lecture halls between classes, so collaborative work is easy, and you have monitors available for deep work.
My overall academic experience
My overall academic experience was very pleasant. The first semester took on a more generalist approach, introducing International Management as a field and going over different aspects of management in the modern day (emerging economies, sustainability, globalisation). So, from an academic perspective, it made a lot of sense, the entire institute is present for these modules to gain a foundational knowledge before delving into more niche modules around your chosen course.
I really enjoyed the 'Institutional Foundations of Capitalism and Entrepreneurship' module. For me the historical aspect of it made the module really interesting and really helped provide context to the rise of capitalism as an economic ideology. It doesn't purely just focus on the past, it uses history to make sense of why capitalism is shaped the way it is in different economies, and I really appreciated that.
Aspects of my course that I enjoyed
Block teaching made a lot of sense in this degree for a number of reasons in my opinion. It really helped me focus my time on relevant tasks and I found the cadence of assignments and tasks to be much more manageable. There was a natural ramp with the start of each module which also made the flow of the course very natural. It almost felt like there was a week to reset from the previous module and assignment, as you started out a module. It didn't feel like the traditional university teaching format where students have more and more assignments being added, all due at the same time.
From an institute and student culture perspective as well, I think it made a massive difference. Students were meeting very regularly from the start of their courses, with classes almost on a daily basis so it was really easy to meet everyone and interact with them naturally. It really helps to build a culture where everyone supports each other and naturally become friends.
Academic and careers support
Both academic and careers support is easily accessible and incredibly helpful. Lecturers provide a good amount of academic support through their modules and make it clear what they expect from coursework, but more support is available if needed. The careers support is helpful across all stages, whether it’s searching for the right opportunities for you, preparing for psychometric tests, interviews as well as assessment centres.
How Loughborough University London has prepared me for my future career
Firstly, the support I got from job applications gave me a lot of insight on the corporate world to prepare me for what to expect. In terms of transferable skills, the coursework is targeted to give students the basics needed to perform in your professional career. Whether it’s presentations, data analysis or written tasks, there’s a consideration for what kind of tasks employers are likely to give in the years following your masters.
My advice to future students
Find a course which suits your interests and will help you make the next step after your master's. Whether it’s further education or a career switch, the main thing you should be looking at is what the university and what the course can do for you to get to the next step. Loughborough University London does a fantastic job at putting students first and approaches everything with a student-first mentality. Whether it’s connecting students to businesses through the Collaborative Project or offering career support with alumni panels, the decisions are made with the students’ wellbeing at heart!
