- Programme: MA International Development
Why I chose Loughborough University London
The Media and Communications module stood out to me as a strong opportunity to hone my communication skills while grounding them in the context of international development and social change. Additionally, my prior interactions with staff members from Loughborough University in my home country, left a lasting impression. The warmth and guidance they offered gave me confidence in the level of support I would receive on campus.
My motivation for applying for a Chevening Scholarship
Through leading projects that empowered children and young people, and communicating their impact, I reached a point where I recognised the need to further equip myself in order to deepen my impact. Having been involved in multiple initiatives, I understood that stronger knowledge and leadership capacity were essential for scaling meaningful change. The Chevening Scholarship, with its focus on developing exceptional leaders, stood out as the right opportunity to pursue, and so far, it has been an incredibly enriching journey.
Like many people leaving their home country, stepping away from the familiar into the unfamiliar brought a mix of emotions. A part of me felt anxious, but my excitement and determination to grow and build a new version of myself outweighed that fear. As the plane landed at Heathrow Airport and I looked out of the window, I knew it was game time — and, as always, I was ready.
My overall academic experience
I would describe the experience as insightful and truly eye-opening. I was stretched and placed in situations that required me to think critically and engage far beyond surface-level understanding. I found myself questioning existing theories and ideas, while also learning to collaborate with people from diverse cultural and disciplinary backgrounds through various modules. Overall, the experience significantly strengthened my critical thinking and communication skills.
Future Space truly lives up to its name, actively preparing students for the future of work. The emails from the academic support team were also consistently useful and timely, providing the guidance needed throughout the programme.
Aspects of my course I have enjoyed
Honestly, every course has been impactful! Dr. Tatevik’s Diplomacy in a Digital World broadened my perspective on international relations. Prof. Tufte’s module deepened my understanding of the unique dynamics of the Global South, Professor Ksenia’s Sustainability and Resilience module was both visually engaging and intellectually stimulating.
Dr. Jessica’s Media and Communications module provided practical exposure, including visits to the BBC and the IIED, where I learned firsthand about the role of media in development. The Grand Challenges module pushed me to collaborate with students from other disciplines, while the Corporate Social Responsibility module challenged me to critically examine what CSR should and should not be. Overall, every aspect of the programme has played a significant role in shaping the person I am becoming.
Highlights of my time at Loughborough University London
• Dr. Tim Oliver’s long emails will always be a highlight, they were consistently rich with vital, and sometimes life-changing insights.
• Volunteering as a Chatham House Student Ambassador was definitely a highlight .
• Holding a puppy for the first time during puppy therapy, especially as someone who hasn’t always been comfortable around dogs.
• Serving students in my Institute as an Institute Representative and of course, the fun hangouts with fellow students.
Campus facilities and resources
The campus facilities and resources were excellent. I particularly appreciated that, despite not being based on the Midlands campus, we were still given access to opportunities such as links and tickets to sporting events. That level of inclusion stood out to me.
How Loughborough University London has prepared me for my future career
I would say Loughborough London places a strong emphasis on interdisciplinarity, which is essential for anyone looking to excel in the workplace. The group projects, in particular, helped me see things through the lenses of others. As a result, I now engage more effectively with people from different industries and backgrounds.
My advice to current and prospective students
I would say harness every opportunity and resource available to you. It’s only one year, and it goes by incredibly fast. Embrace the journey, leverage LinkedIn and Instagram to put yourself out there, and remain intellectually humble; that’s how real learning happens.
