Dr Erhan Ekmekcioglu
Senior Lecturer, Institute for Digital Technologies
Erhan is an experienced researcher with strong background in video processing, interactive multimedia technologies, affective computing, and multimodal data analysis. Erhan has participated in and led collaborative research projects in this area and supervised postgraduate taught and research students.
Over the past twelve years Erhan has worked in several large-scale European Union funded research projects with diverse responsibilities from R&D and integration to work package coordination and project technical management. Since 2018, Erhan has been coordinating a Newton-funded project focussing on international development in teacher education, where responsive AI-based simulation technology is used for the development of teacher trainees. Since 2015, Erhan has been teaching specialist MSc modules in multimedia processing and coding, media application design, 3D media environments, and emotion recognition and its use areas. Since September 2019, Erhan is acting as the Chief Postgraduate Programmes Director in the Institute for Digital Technologies.
Erhan received a BSc (Hons) degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the Middle East Technical University in 2006, and a PhD degree in Multimedia Communication Technologies from the University of Surrey in 2010 with the thesis title: "Advanced Multi-view Video Coding Techniques".
Prior to his appointment at Loughborough University London, Erhan worked at the University of Surrey as a post-doctoral research fellow in the I-Lab Multimedia Communication Research Group; part of the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing. In 2008, Erhan was a visiting researcher at the Telekom Innovation Laboratories (Deutsche Telekom) in Berlin, Germany.
Current research and collaborations
Erhan’s current research interests include multimodal emotion recognition and human behaviour recognition, multimodal teaching and learning analytics for computer-based tutoring platforms, affective and responsive user interface design for emerging interactive multimedia experiences.
Current PhD / research supervisions
Erhan is currently supervising a PhD project on understanding the impact of pedagogical styles in students’ creative performance in digital creative media subjects and associating several behavioural and biometric traits with it.
Completed PhD / research supervisions
Erhan has previously co-supervised successful PhD projects on error resilient HD/UHD video streaming and multi-view 3D video distribution across P2P networks.
Interests and activities
Erhan has long been regularly serving as a reviewer to several journals and international conferences including major IEEE outlets in multimedia and video technologies.
Between 2010 and 2017, Erhan was a member of the technical delegation of UK National Standards Body (IST/37: Coding of picture, audio, multimedia and hypermedia information). Between 2017 and 2019, Erhan was the chair of the 3D Processing & Communications Interest Group (3DIG) within IEEE Multimedia Communications Technical Committee.
Erhan is serving as a guest editor for the IEEE Multimedia Communications Technical Committee (MMTC) online proceedings.
