Dr Erhan Ekmekcioglu

Erhan is an experienced researcher with strong expertise in both 2D and 3D video processing, compression, transport systems, and perceptual quality assessment. Erhan has been an active contributor of various collaborative research projects and is an experienced supervisor of postgraduate students.

Erhan is a leading researcher specialising in video processing and communication, particularly in immersive and interactive video technologies and media. Erhan has worked on several high-profile EU research projects with diverse responsibilities from R&D to integration and work package coordination. Erhan is currently leading the research activities of the institute in the immersive media area. Since 2015, Erhan has taught MSc modules in multimedia processing and coding, media application design and advanced 3D media environments as part of the Digital Technologies suite of programmes. He is also the course director for MRes programmes at Loughborough University London. 

Academic background

Erhan received a BSc (Hons) degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the Middle East Technical University in 2006, and a PhD degree in Multimedia Communication Technologies from the University of Surrey in 2010 with the thesis title: "Advanced Multi-view Video Coding Techniques".
Prior to his appointment at Loughborough University London, Erhan worked at the University of Surrey as a post-doctoral research fellow in the I-Lab Multimedia Communication Research Group; part of the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing. In  in 2008, Erhan was a visiting researcher at the Telekom Innovation Laboratories (Deutsche Telekom) in Berlin, Germany.

Current research and collaborations

Erhan's current research interests focus on processing and transmission challenges of high-quality omnidirectional video content (also known as 360 degree video), Free-Viewpoint TV and multi-view streaming, and user engagement modelling through multi-modal sensing and its application to multimedia consumption. Erhan is currently a co-investigator of and a supervisor at the EU-FP7 Marie Curie Initial Training Network Cloudscreens that is coordinated by Loughborough University London.

Current PhD / research supervisions

Erhan is currently supervising two PhD projects on error resilient HD/UHD video communication, and on perceptual processing of omnidirectional videos, respectively.

Completed PhD / research supervisions

In the past, Erhan successfully co-supervised one PhD student to completion in 2015 with the thesis title "Adaptive multi-view video communication techniques", and a visiting PhD student from the Technical University of Madrid in 2014 with the thesis title "A framework for the analysis and optimisation of delay in multi-view video coding schemes".

Erhan is a member of the technical delegation of UK National Standards Body, who represents UK economic and social interests across the European and international standards organisations.

He co-organised the Special Session on 3D Immersive & Interactive Multimedia over the Future Internet in Digital Signal Processing Conference 2013 (DSP 2013) held in Santorini, Greece, and the Special Session on 3D Multimedia Experience over the Future Internet in IEEE International Conference on Image processing 2014 (ICIP 2014), Paris, France. He is co-editing the upcoming Special Issue on Handling Interactivity in Novel Multimedia Services, to be published in IEEE Multimedia Communications Technical Committee (MMTC) E-Letters in 2016.
