On Friday 16th 2023, Loughborough University London hosted the International Workshop on Refugees’ Employment and Integration: Challenges of and opportunities for the employment of refugees in late industrialising countries. The workshop was conveyed by Dr Merve Sancak, Dr Nicola Chelotti and Massimo D’Angelo. The workshop was the result of an inter-institute collaboration between the Institute for International Management and the Institute for Diplomacy and International Governance at Loughborough University London.

The event has brought together a diverse group of stakeholders – both international academics and practitioners – that are relevant to migrants’ and refugees' employment. The purpose was to start addressing the question of why refugees end up working in labour‐intensive jobs that are prone to exploitation, and what can be done to improve refugees’ employment conditions.

The all-day program was divided into four different sessions and it ended with a keynote speech delivered by Prof Neli Demireva from the University of Essex. The title of Prof Demireva’s speech was “What are the main factors preventing foreign workers from getting good jobs and how can they be addressed?”. The workshop had in total 40 participants in person and online from across different countries throughout the day.

The workshop has been financed by the University JOINT Fund, which is a school-wide funding scheme to help seed and develop Research, Teaching and Enterprise projects led by academic staff in London. The main questions and findings of the workshop presentations will be prepared as a report that will be published on the website of Loughborough University London.
