Johannes is currently studying our MSc Sport Analytics and Technologies within the Institute for Sport Business.
Before studying within the Institute for Sport Business, Johannes studied his undergraduate degree at the University of Salford.
Why did you choose to study at Loughborough University London?
I chose to study at Loughborough University London because of the excellent reputation it has. The University is highly ranked in all the major league tables and is particularly strong within sports related subjects. Furthermore, I love the location of the London campus. It is surrounded by businesses such as BT Sport and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is just a few minutes away on foot.
The University has also strong links with local and global businesses that provide me with opportunities to connect with the right individuals to widen my network. Lastly, after attending one of their open days, I was blown away by all the support the University provides you with to help you reach your goals.
What attracted you to your programme?
I was attracted to my programme due to my passion for sports. I love sports so I knew I wanted to continue my academic journey within the sports field. Over lockdown, I developed an interest in data science, therefore this course was just perfect for me as it offers modules in subject area. Additionally, Loughborough University is ranked first in the world for sports-related subjects. So, once I sent off my application and got accepted onto the course, I had my heart set on attending Loughborough University London.
What do you enjoy the most about your course/Loughborough University London?
I love the diversity of students and academics at the university. I have met some amazing fellow students who are really passionate about their chosen subject. The academics come from a diverse background with a real passion for the subject they're teaching. Some modules had several fantastic guest lecturers talk to us. Some of the guest lecturers were Loughborough alumni that were working within sports and we had a talk from the Head of Research and Innovation at a big football club. There has also been many more outstanding individuals that have enhanced my learning experience.
I also love that I can take a stroll in the huge Olympic park or walk along the wonderful canal down the road from the University, to relax or have lunch.
How do you think studying a master's degree is helping you to reach your future career goals?
This master’s degree is helping me gain valuable in-demand skills and knowledge required for me to reach my career goals. This master’s degree is also helping me build connections with individuals within the industry and broaden my professional network through guest lecturers and networking events. Additionally, I'm able to study a subject of interest in-depth to provide me with the opportunity to pursue a PhD in the future within the field.
How do you like to spend your time away from your studies?
I like to spend my time outside of the University by keeping myself active. I love going for a run, playing football with my friends and taking walks in the park. I also enjoy taking pictures in my spare time and riding my skateboard. I enjoy reading books related to sports. I also have a part-time job to earn some extra money. Furthermore, spending quality time with friends and family is important to me too.
Do you have any advice for students moving to London?
My advice is to start saving your money and creating a budget so that you don't have to worry about your finances. London is a beautiful city and gigantic, so do your research on the area you want to live in and find out how far it is from the University. London has lots to offer and there is always something to do, so go and explore one of the greatest cities on earth!
