Arthur Milroy

Before joining Loughborough University London, I was working at the Olympic Council of Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur, where I helped to organise and deliver the International Olympic Committee 128 Session in Kuala Lumpur, August 2015.

I was also working at the National Sport Institute of Malaysia at the same time, where I coordinated a sports outreach programme that launched in five states. I liaised with schools, coaches and parents to help launch the programme which targeted the more socially deprived areas in Malaysia.

Loughborough University is one of the top universities in the UK and one of the leading institutions for sport in the world. The decision to study at Loughborough was never in question and it was made even easier by discovering about the campus in London opening in 2015.

It was only after chatting to Dr Mark King at a Sports Medicine and Sports Science Conference in Malaysia that I realised that Loughborough University London was launching! After hearing that, I applied straight away and never looked back!

If you combine Loughborough University's prestige as a top university, the quality of the staff in the Institute of Sport Business and the location in London's Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, you have a very enviable mix that not many institutions in the world would be able to match!

The University instils a solution-orientated attitude and one that encourages you to dream big. The knowledge, advice and support from professors when looking for post-graduation opportunities was invaluable and helped a lot in that next step.

Tap into the vast contacts and experience of the staff because the likelihood is that they have worked in the field that you are looking to step into, or at least know someone else that has!

I was the Programme Representative for Sport Business and Innovation which was cool. It was great that the University regularly sought student's feedback on a variety of topics throughout the year.

Also football. I played a lot of football!

The International Olympic Committee are based in Lausanne, Switzerland. They are the leaders of the Olympic Movement and responsible for the Olympic Games.

I volunteered at the London 2012 and Sochi 2014 Olympic Games which were both great experiences and gave me a insight into sporting competition at the highest level.

After finishing my Bachelor's, I worked for a sport travel company in London which showed me a different aspect of the operations that go into major sporting events. I was lucky enough to go to the NFL, Champions League matches and the FIFA World Cup in this role.

Before taking my Master's at Loughborough University London I decided to try something new and found myself working at the Olympic Council of Malaysia and National Sports Institute of Malaysia. It was here that I realised that I wanted to work for the IOC after completing my studies.

I work in the Olympic Solidarity department of the IOC and it is particularly rewarding to support the administering of training, funding and grants to those athletes and coaches with the greatest needs.

The visit to Bisham Abbey - the home of the English Institute of Sport - was super interesting and the standout for me. Danny Kerry gave us a really interesting and emotional talk about his involvement with Team GB Hockey and his journey as a leader.

Aside from the course itself and the knowledge of the staff, probably the most important thing is the network, contacts and experience you can accumulate during your studies. This can really stand you in good stead and open up opportunities post-graduation.

Leadership Models and Practices. By visiting a variety of organisations and hearing from leaders in the field, the module was great at analysing leadership in different contexts and then applying the principles to sport.
