Walking with Freire: 40 years of Communication and Social Change in Colombia
This lecture invites us to travel with a Latin American activist-scholar who, since the 1970s, has engaged with Paulo Freire’s body of work, both as a communication practitioner in the field and in the academy. In this lecture Amparo Cadavid will highlight the influence of Paulo Freire on the thinking and action of generations of professionals, activists, managers, producers and academics who have set out to transform the work from the foundations. She will draw on the Colombian case and in the wider region to discuss the evolution of the field of communication and social change and its current challenges. Freire's contributions have been key in focusing communicative work towards development, transformation, reconciliation and social change, especially in difficult contexts where poverty, armed conflict and other complex social dynamics prevail. For more than 50 years, Freirean thought has allowed us to see ourselves and others through the prism of equality, rights, justice and hope.

About the Paulo Freire Annual Lecture series
The Paulo Freire Annual Lecture takes place each year around the time of Freire’s birthday. They follow a trajectory of events and publications organised by the Loughborough University London since 2019 and intensified during the celebrations of Freire’s birth centennial in 2021.
Paulo Freire was one of the leading social scientists of the 20th century. Known mostly for his influence in the world of education, his works, written between the 1950s and until his death in 1997, appealed far broader. His humanist approach to life, his philosophy of change and commitment to social justice, and his profound engagement with social practice and action made him widely popular across the social sciences and amongst social movements.
