Why I chose Loughborough University London
Always wanting to better myself, I had often thought about doing a master’s degree but hadn't found the right course. I received an email about a Team GB scholarship through Loughborough University London and the course was for MA Leadership in Sport. After doing some research, I realised that it really appealed to me and would give me lots of valuable knowledge about being a successful leader in the sporting world, opening many doors once I retire from being a professional athlete.
My overall academic experience
I thoroughly enjoyed my academic experience. It helped tremendously that I found every module interesting, and it was just the right amount of work for me to be able to do alongside being a full-time athlete. I decided to complete the course in 1 year, as I personally found that keeping my brain working full-time, helped me to remain focused and engaged. I found the group projects very useful, as it allowed me to work in a team environment, which isn't something I am used to, being an athlete. This helped me to collaborate with others, share ideas, and be able to confidently lead. Overall, it was a great insight into what being a leader in a working environment would be like. It was also great to meet other like-minded people, who shared an interest in sport. We even created a group chat, where we would not only help each other with academic work, but would also share interesting sport related articles, facts and invites to local sport events.
Academic and careers support
I made sure to make use of the academic support available, especially whilst writing my dissertation. I wanted to get the best marks possible and the academic support I received was always very helpful, and the tutors were more than happy to help. I felt comfortable asking for advice, whenever I needed it.
How Loughborough University London has prepared me for my future career
I am still figuring out what career path to venture down after my professional sports career, however the MA Leadership in Sport course has inspired me to take a leadership role in the sports world. I am currently exploring starting my own coaching business, as well as keeping my eyes open for leadership roles in national governing bodies.
My advice to current and prospective students
My advice would be to enjoy your studies and make sure to pick a dissertation subject that really interests you. Make friends with the other students on your course, so you can learn and help one another during your modules.
