- Programme: Digital Media and Creative Industries MA
Why I chose Loughborough University London
I was awarded a scholarship from the German Academic Scholarship Foundation (Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes) which has a partnership with Loughborough University, so this was a major influence in my decision. During a previous exchange semester in London, I discovered that I resonated with the UK's teaching style, which is very interactive and encourages critical thinking. The master’s course appealed to me because it combined theoretical and practical elements and offered flexibility through module choices, allowing me to shape my own academic pathway. With a previous degree in Economics and Management, I wanted to pursue a more creative career that would fully unfold my potential. The university’s industry connections in London made this course seem like a great opportunity.
My overall academic experience
The teaching quality was consistently high, and I particularly enjoyed modules that allowed creative freedom. Many lecturers were supportive and engaging in their delivery, making the sessions insightful and applicable to real-world scenarios. The block teaching format is unique.
I appreciated the assessment methods (presentations, reflective essays or even podcasts) which felt more tailored to the creative industries rather than traditional exams. The interactive nature of the modules encouraged participation and collaboration, which helped bring concepts to life. Lecturers often included industry insights and open discussions, making the learning experience dynamic and more relevant. They also offered or allowed a critical lens on the topics discussed which I found very insightful. Additionally, the block teaching structure allowed me to immerse myself into one subject at a time.
Academic and careers support
Lecturers were always approachable and supportive, willing to provide guidance on academic topics or personal development. I made use of the career services once for CV and cover letter reviews, and while I personally didn’t rely on these extensively, I saw many peers benefit greatly from the support offered. I personally also liked the more informal networking events, fostering a sense of community within the institute and making it easier to connect and feel supported.
Campus facilities and resources
The campus is well-located with great transport links and plenty of nearby cultural and social spaces. There are a lot of study areas that can be used for assignments. One of my highlights was discovering student-led initiatives, such as the “Art for Wellbeing” group that I started. I would encourage students to explore LSU resources early on, as there are many opportunities to get involved, start your own projects and build community. While the campus can feel a bit quiet at times, frequent events and activities help bring it to life.
Highlights of my time at Loughborough London outside of my course
Living in London is definitely a plus, the city offers endless opportunities for exploration, culturally, creatively and socially. I made it a point to go beyond the typical areas and truly experience London’s diversity. Although it can be expensive at times, if you know the right tips and tricks, you can really get the most out of your experience and shape it according to your needs and interests.
How Loughborough University London has prepared me for my future career
The course helped me deepen both practical skills and industry awareness. Through assignments and group work, I gained a clearer understanding of my strengths, leadership style and analytical abilities. Engaging with lecturers who shared their own career journeys also showed me the diverse pathways available after graduation.
My advice to future students
1. Get involved in university life. Your experience is what you make of it. If there’s something you’d like to see improved or introduced, don’t hesitate to speak with institute directors, lecturers or LSU representatives. Take advantage of networking events, micro-internships and student groups. Founding a student group is not as complicated as it may seem and you get a lot of support from LSU.
2. Be patient with yourself when adjusting to a new teaching and grading system; it’s completely normal to need time to adapt and everyone has their own pace. Make use of the wellbeing services and reach out to your tutor or to your peers when needed.
3. Most importantly, choose modules that genuinely interest you because enjoying your subject will make the block teaching format far more engaging and rewarding.
