Why I chose Loughborough University London
I was offered the opportunity to study at Loughborough as part of a corporate sponsorship, and I felt incredibly privileged to be a Loughborough student. Loughborough is highly regarded within my social networks, which are largely focused on sport, so I was excited to seize the chance to study at one of the best universities in the field.
My overall academic experience
I thoroughly enjoyed pushing myself and exploring areas that weren’t originally in my wheelhouse. I’ve always had a passion for history, so learning about the history of sport and sport globalisation was a major pull for me. Although I was initially uncertain about topics like sports law, politics, and sustainability in sport, these subjects ended up broadening my perspective and deepening my understanding of the sports world.
One of the most valuable skills I developed during the course was critical thinking. It wasn’t something I naturally used before, but now I rely on it regularly in my role. I also enjoyed learning about the evolution of sport, its future trajectory, and how I can stay ahead of the curve as the industry continues to evolve.
A highlight was definitely the trip to Sandhurst. The lecture focused on leadership within the army, and it provided me with a unique perspective on what really matters in leadership and when it matters. It was a powerful experience that reignited a passion for learning and personal growth.
Academic resources and support
I spent a lot of time at the London campus, which holds significant sporting history, especially since it was the media house for the London 2012 Olympics. The campus had a great library and provided a space for me to connect with peers during face-to-face lectures. It allowed me to engage more deeply with the material and with other students.
When I first started, I was nervous about engaging in academic writing and critical thinking, as it had been some time since I’d had to do so. However, Loughborough provides excellent resources and support. The tools, techniques, and regular workshops available helped me feel well-supported throughout my studies. The lecturers and the content they provided were not only stimulating but also thought-provoking, which encouraged new ways of thinking.
How my studies prepared me for my career
This course has helped me become a better academic, which has had a direct impact on my professional work. I now think more critically and am able to present clear, precise recommendations that drive better outcomes and foster more effective discussions with my peers.
I highly recommend the Leadership in Sports master’s course to anyone looking to broaden their career in sports. The content is incredibly varied, which keeps things engaging, and the insights gained will definitely help in advancing your career in the industry.
