Why I chose Loughborough University London
Having been born and raised in East London, the opportunity to study so close to home felt both unique and meaningful. Loughborough University’s strong reputation for academic excellence and high-quality teaching immediately stood out to me. I was particularly drawn to the variety of assessment methods offered on my course, as I felt they would not only allow my strengths to shine but also push me to grow in new areas. Additionally, the postgraduate-only campus created an environment that felt focused, mature, and well-suited to the next stage of my academic and professional journey.
My overall academic experience
My experience at Loughborough University London was overwhelmingly positive. The lecturers excelled not only in delivering complex material clearly and effectively, but also in creating an open and engaging learning environment. They encouraged dialogue, valued student input, and made space for independent thinking. Among students, there was a strong sense of community and collaboration—we supported one another both academically and personally, which really enriched the experience. The wider LUL staff were also incredibly supportive, always approachable and proactive in providing guidance, whether it related to academic progress, wellbeing, or career development.
Aspects of my course that I enjoyed
I particularly enjoyed the seminars and group presentations throughout my course. Seminars provided a valuable opportunity to build on the knowledge shared in lectures, offering space for deeper discussion and the chance to learn from the perspectives of my peers. Group presentations were another highlight, as we were given a great deal of autonomy to explore topics creatively and manage our own collaborative processes—skills that are essential in the professional world. While my dissertation was one of the more challenging aspects of the course, it was also deeply rewarding. It allowed me to explore a subject I was passionate about in depth and helped strengthen my research, critical thinking, and time management skills.
Academic and careers support
The academic support at Loughborough University London was excellent throughout my course. Lecturers were approachable and genuinely invested in our learning, always willing to clarify concepts or provide feedback outside of class. Seminars were particularly valuable in this regard, as they encouraged open discussion and allowed us to engage more deeply with the material. In terms of careers support, the university offered practical and tailored guidance that helped me think more strategically about my career path. Whether it was through CV workshops, one-to-one sessions, or networking events, the careers team played a significant role in helping me identify opportunities and presenting myself professionally.
Highlights of my time at Loughborough London outside of my course
One of the highlights outside of my academic studies was helping to organise a poetry event on campus. It was a rewarding experience that allowed me to contribute creatively to the university community and connect with fellow students through a shared appreciation for the arts. Being involved in the planning and delivery of the event helped me develop skills in teamwork, event coordination, and communication - all in a relaxed and enjoyable setting. In addition to that, the social events and informal gatherings with my peers in the local area were a great part of my overall experience.
How Loughborough University London has prepared me for my future career
My time at Loughborough University London played a significant role in preparing me for my current professional path. The blend of academic rigour and practical learning equipped me with both the theoretical knowledge and real-world skills needed to succeed. The variety of assessment types helped me develop key competencies like teamwork, communication, critical thinking, and independent research. Being in a postgraduate-only campus also meant I was surrounded by like-minded individuals focused on growth, which created a motivating and professional environment. Additionally, the careers support and industry engagement opportunities helped me sharpen my career goals and approach the job market with more clarity and confidence.
My advice to future students
My advice to current and prospective students:
1. Make the most of every opportunity the university offers—both inside and outside the classroom. The academic environment is supportive and engaging, but it’s up to you to be proactive in asking questions, seeking feedback, and building relationships with your lecturers and peers.
2. Make full use of the careers services early on—they provide excellent guidance that can really shape your professional direction.
3. Finally, embrace the diversity and community on campus. It's a unique setting filled with students from all over the world, and the connections you make there can be just as valuable as the knowledge you gain.
