Dr Vicky Lofthouse is a Senior Lecturer in Industrial Design and heads up the Sustainable Design Research Group in the Design School at Loughborough University.
Dr Vicky Lofthouse is a Senior Lecturer in Industrial Design and heads up the Sustainable Design Research Group in the Design School at Loughborough University. She has been a practicing researcher/consultant in the field since 1998. She has supervised 6 PhDs and examined 8 PhDs in the area and taught extensively at both undergraduate and masters level.
Vicky has considerable project management experience with a wide range of industrial and academic partners on a variety of different projects. Her current research explores the implementation of responsible design in professional industrial design practice, through the use of design thinking. Her research has been used to inform the programmes offered by the Institute for Design Innovation and Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
Vicky graduated from Loughborough University with a First Class Honours degree in Industrial Design and Technology in 1996 before completing a PhD at Cranfield University. She has been a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in Design at Loughborough University since 2003 teaching widely on Undergraduate and Masters Industrial Design and Product programmes at both the Loughborough and London campuses.
Current research and collaborations
Vicky's interest in making design better - better for the environment and better for society has led to her vision:
'To equip designers with the knowledge, skills, interest, support and environment they need to create socially and environmentally responsible products, services and systems as part of the mainstream work.'
Vicky likes to take a very practical approach to her research and seek to collaborate with companies to ensure that her research outputs are highly relevant and valuable. These collaborations have seen her work with a wide range of large and small organisations over the years.

Vicky's main areas of interest are:
Understanding how to enable industrial design practitioners to engage in more responsible design,
Helping companies integrate ecodesign into their product development process and sustainable design into their business practices,
Communicating ecodesign and sustainable design issues to designers,
Identifying opportunities arising from the challenges of sustainable design requirements,
Practical experience of using ecodesign tools and teaching companies to use ecodesign tools,
Solving ecodesign and sustainable design problems,
Understanding how to raise awareness of the consideration of social issues in sustainable design education,
Sustainable packaging - especially refillable packaging,
Developing educational material,
Workshop development and facilitation,
Using creativity techniques to encourage future thinking, and
Project management using Grove visualisation techniques.
