Dr Allan Edwards
Reader in the Institute for Sport Business
Dr Edwards is a Reader in the Institute for Sport Business. He is the Programme Director for MSc Sport Business and Innovation.
Dr Edwards was appointed to Loughborough University London in 2017. As Programme Director for MSc Sport Business and Innovation, he teaches a variety of Sport Business modules in the Institute for Sport Business. He has significant managerial experience in a variety of university and sport organisations. Allan has had executive positions in professional sport franchises and established his own sport business company.
Dr Edwards has a substantial record of academic publications in highly ranked journals as well as successful completion of research programs that have made a major original contribution. He has over 70 academic publications including 4 books, book chapters, quality journal articles (Sport Management Review, International Journal of Sport Management and European Journal of Sport Management, Sport in Society) and industry reports. He has published 3 books on research methods: Extending the Boundaries, Qualitative Research in Sport Management and Research Methods for Sport Management. Allan is currently working on two book projects in the areas if Sport Ecosystems and Qualitative research.
Dr Edwards has significant management and administrative experience as a Head of Department in both the UK and Australia; Deputy Head of School; Associate Dean Teaching and Learning; Associate Dean International; representation on numerous university, faculty and school committees; Program lead and Course leadership. Prior to his appointment, Allan served as Head of the Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Canberra, Australia. His international appointments have allowed him to establish extensive international networks across the higher education sector with universities in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Thailand, India, China, Singapore and Portugal.
Current research and collaborations
Dr Edwards current research interests are in four distinct areas. These are:
(1) Sport Innovation and Entrepreneurship; (2) Global Sport Ecosystems and (3) Qualitative research methods for Sport Business; and the Internet of Things (IoT) in sport.
Current research is focused on developing a new model for understanding business ecosystems in sport, how to create innovative ecosystems in sport enterprises, applying new research methods for studies into digital sport ecosystems, and examining policy mechanisms and frameworks to apply a uniform approach to IoT sport ecosystems.
Dr Edwards was an executive board member, sat on the Board of Governors and was the Vice President of the Oceania region for the International Council for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Sport, and Dance (ICHPER·SD). organizations. Dr Edwards has consulted with numerous international governing bodies, commercial sporting organisations and government agencies, including: Queensland Government Sport Advisory Group, World Rugby, Australian Sports Commission, Australian Institute of Sport, AFL, NRL, ARU, PGA Australia, Surfing Australia, and the Football Federation of Australia. He has recently been a judge on the BT Sport Innovation awards panel as well as the Hype Foundation Spin lab UK innovation and growth programme.
