At the Institute for Creative Futures, we offer a dynamic range of academic seminars, events, and symposia year-round. One of our highlights, the annual FLUX design event, brings together innovative postgraduate student work, groundbreaking doctoral research, and thought-provoking speaker talks that explore the latest trends and emerging areas in design research.

FLUX 2025: More than self

The FLUX 2025: More than Self symposium, held on 17 June 2025 at Loughborough University London, brought together artists, researchers, and students to explore multispecies encounters, porous identities, and creative methods for understanding the “more than human.” Through panels, workshops, and a vibrant student exhibition featuring films, games, and interactive media, speakers including Angela YT Chan, Ruth Catlow, and Harun Morrison highlighted how creative practice can foster empathy, collective liberation, and new approaches to self and other.

FLUX 2024: Design and Policy Advocacy

FLUX 2024 focused on design as a key driver of transformative policy advocacy, emphasising its role in fostering innovation and addressing planetary challenges. Discussions explored how design could enhance public engagement in policymaking, tackling inequalities and promoting inclusive systems for marginalized communities. Keynote talks and collaborations with Citizens UK, Hackney Council Health Team, and SHIFT highlighted strategies for building equitable health systems and inclusive infrastructures.

FLUX 2023: Design Commoning

In 2023, the Institute hosted the FLUX symposium centered around the theme of Design Commoning. The event featured a captivating showcase of research and teaching across the Institute, alongside an exhibition of selected master's student projects from various programmes.

FLUX Design Symposium 2022

On the evening of September 29, the FLUX Design Symposium welcomed Professor Ezio Manzini, a renowned expert in design for social innovation. He kicked off the event with a thought-provoking keynote on his latest work, ‘Livable Proximity’, diving into how design can respond to our changing world.
