Yishu wanted to study at a University with lots of careers support - that's why she chose Loughborough University London.

Yishu Lu studied Managing Innovation in Creative Organisations MSc before securing a role as and Account Manager in Edinburgh.

How has Loughborough University London inspired you and helped you to progress in your career?

I had gained some work experience and taken part in entrepreneurial activities before I joined Loughborough University London, but I hadn’t discovered the right career path for me. So I decided to study a master’s degree at Loughborough University London, after hearing about all the careers support they offered.

All the events provided by the careers service and the support and passion from my teachers, made the whole experience enjoyable! I experienced the job application process and learnt how to stand out during the University’s mock assessment centre sessions, and learnt the kinds of candidates employers are looking for in our career workshops. I also developed my leadership, teamwork, communication and other transferable skills employers are looking for, throughout my modules. It was a really fruitful experience for me!

Tell us more about the company you are currently working for

Mandarin Consulting enables ambitious Chinese students and graduates to launch and progress their international careers effectively. We help them to enter top-tier global firms by developing their cross-cultural understanding and western business knowledge and skills during one-to-one coaching sessions with western coaches who were senior level managers in international companies for decades.

Tell us about your career journey so far

After graduating, I got married and focused on family life for half a year. After this, I found out about Mandarin Consulting, which I shared the same values with, and knew I had to be a part of it. I applied immediately. After three rounds of interviews, I finally began working at Mandarin Consulting at their Edinburgh office. I have gained a lot here - through the staff training and experience of my colleagues, too. I'm enjoying my job right now and I believe this is where my career continues.

What do you love the most about your current job?

I usually help students and young professionals during one-to-one consultations. I love analysing their varying situations and finding solutions for them. When they realise the things they need to learn are exactly what we can provide, the exciting emotion among us always inspires me.

What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?

Every time I meet a customer who matches our values, and the global elite coaching we offer proves valuable for them, make me proud about my job and what it offers to others.

What was your favourite module and why?

My favourite module was Intellectual Property, not only because I achieved a high grade, but I also enjoyed working as part of an effective team for the module assessment. I loved the study environment at Loughborough University London and the diversity of the students in my modules.

What piece of advice would you give to current students?

During my time at Loughborough University London, few of the Chinese overseas alumni paid attention to careers support and job applications available during the year. We had a great deal of lectures and resources to support us in starting our career journeys, but very few students realised the importance. Make sure you don’t miss out on any of the opportunities Loughborough University London offers!
