Scholarships and bursaries

Our ambition is to inspire high achieving students from all backgrounds, to benefit from our outstanding teaching and cutting edge research facilities.

Only a limited number of scholarships and bursaries are available, so apply as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Hear from some of our previous scholarship winners.

Inspiring Success Scholarship

The Inspiring Success Scholarship offers 100% off the full cost of tuition fees for selected unemployed and underemployed graduates, who obtained GCSE or A-level (or equivalent) qualifications from Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Newham or Waltham Forest.

Students must meet the following criteria: 

  • Have graduated between 2012 and 2016 with at least a second class honours degree from a UK university, or equivalent overseas qualification recognised by Loughborough University
  • Be currently residing in, and have previously taken GCSE or A level qualifications whilst residing in Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets or Waltham Forest
  • Be currently unemployed or underemployed, earning below £570.90 per week
  • Attend a two-day Inspiring Success programme and make a positive contribution on both days
  • Agree to become ambassadors of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and actively give back to the local community through Echo 

To be considered for this scholarship, students must complete the Inspiring Success scholarship application form. Successful applicants will demonstrate academic excellence and potential, and will outline how they wish to develop their local community on completion of their degree.

Dean's Award for Enterprise

The Dean's Award for Enterprise offers 90% off the full cost of tuition fees, for UK, EU and international students with an inspiring business idea.

The award will be given at the discretion of the Dean, with the support of the Senior Leadership Team. Applicants must complete an application form, though students are encouraged to include images and media content to support their application, such as a pitch slide deck or video. Shortlisted applicants will be asked to complete a short video interview to discuss their business idea in more detail.

Winners of the award are under no obligation to start a new business, though winners who are serious about launching their own business will receive professional support and advice to turn their idea into a reality.

East London Community Scholarship

The East London Community Scholarship offers 50% off the full cost of tuition fees for students who obtained GCSE or A-level (or equivalent) qualifications from Barking and Dagenham, Greenwich, Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets or Waltham Forest.

Students who obtained GCSE or A-level (or equivalent) qualifications from Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Newham or Waltham Forest can apply for a scholarship worth 100% off the full cost of tuition fees. To be considered for the 100% scholarship, applicants must complete a one page submission outlining their personal contributions to their local community.

  • Award value: Up to 50% off the full cost of tuition fees
  • Eligible programmes: All taught masters programmes
  • Closing date: 31st July 2017

The Dean's Award for Excellence in Research

The Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research offers 50% off the full cost of tuition fees for students with an inspiring research idea.

Winners of the award are under no obligation to complete a PhD or conduct research into their chosen area, but support and guidance will be available for those who wish to do so.

Candidates must complete a written application form and shortlisted applicants will be invited to an interview. Students living overseas will be invited to complete a video or telephone interview.

Gold Excellence Scholarship

The Gold Excellence Scholarship automatically awards high-achieving UK and EU students 30% off the full cost of their tuition fees. Any UK and EU students holding a high 2:1 or first class degree (or equivalent) from a recognised, high quality institution will receive this scholarship. There is no selection process for this scholarship, as all eligible candidates will be notified accordingly.

  • Award value: 30% off the full cost of tuition fees
  • Eligible programmes: All taught masters programmes

Academic Excellence Scholarship

The Academic Excellence Scholarship automatically awards high-achieving international students 20% off the full cost of their tuition fees. Any student holding a high 2:1 or first class degree (or equivalent) from a recognised, high quality institution will receive this scholarship. There is no selection process for this scholarship, as all eligible candidates will be notified accordingly.

  • Award value: 20% off the full cost of tuition fees
  • Eligible programmes: All taught masters programmes

Alumni Bursary

The Alumni Bursary automatically offers graduates from Loughborough University 20% towards the full cost of their tuition fees, regardless of their programme or nationality. There is no selection process for this scholarship, as all Loughborough University alumni are entitled to this award.

Santander International Postgraduate Scholarship

Loughborough University is pleased to offer five postgraduate taught scholarships, funded by the Santander Universities scheme. Each scholarship provides £5,000 off the full cost of tuition fees for 5 self-funded, full-time postgraduate taught students at Loughborough University or Loughborough University London.

  • Award value: £5,000 off the full cost of your tuition fees
  • Eligible programmes: All full-time taught masters programmes
  • Closing date: 30th April 2017

Students are expected to meet the following criteria:

  • Permanent Resident of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Korea, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Qatar, Russia, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, Uruguay, USA or Venezuela
  • Have an excellent academic record
  • Self-funded

Students wishing to apply for this scholarship must first apply for their chosen postgraduate programme. Students wishing to apply for this award must submit a scholarship application form alongside a personal statement. The selection committee will take into account the personal statement provided when making a decision on an application.

Any award made to an applicant holding a conditional offer for a postgraduate programme will be subject to those conditions being met in full. Additional conditions attached to the Scholarship over and above the conditions in the offer may be also be specified.

Santander UK/EU Postgraduate Scholarship

Loughborough University is pleased to offer five postgraduate taught scholarships, funded by the Santander Universities scheme. Each scholarship provides £5,000 off the full cost of tuition fees for 5 self-funded, full-time postgraduate taught students at Loughborough University or Loughborough University London.

  • Award value: £5,000 off the full cost of your tuition fees
  • Eligible programmes: All full-time taught masters programmes
  • Closing date: 21 July 2017

Students are expected to meet the following criteria:

  • Permanent resident of Belgium, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Spain or the UK
  • Have an excellent academic record
  • Self-funded
  • In financial need

Students wishing to apply for this scholarship must first apply for their chosen postgraduate programme. Students wishing to apply for this award must submit a scholarship application form alongside a personal statement. The selection committee will take into account the personal statement provided when making a decision on an application.

UK Postgraduate Loans Scheme

A new, Government-backed Postgraduate Loan Scheme has been introduced in the UK, and provides a loan of up to £10,000 a year for UK and EU postgraduate masters students. All London masters programmes are eligible for the loan, including MA, MRes and MSc programmes.

The Government is planning on offering a similar scheme to support students wishing to undertake a PhD, which is due to be announced in 2017-18.

Chevening Scholarships

Chevening Scholarships are a UK Government Scholarship Program which is funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. It is awarded to outstanding Scholars who show potential in becoming future leaders, influencers and decision makers. Awards are typically for a one year Master’s degree and are personally selected by British Embassies and High Commissions throughout the world. There are over 44,000 Chevening Alumni around the world who together comprise in an influential and highly regarded global network.

Who can apply?

The Chevening Scholarships are for talented professionals who have been identified as potential future leaders across a wide range of things. These fields include politics, business, the media, civil society and religion. Applicants should be high calibre graduates with personal, intellectual and interpersonal qualities which are necessary for leadership. Chevening Scholarships are available to students from more than 160 counties and territories worldwide.
