Rethinking design practice: Designers and agency in designing the user experience
Ruth is a PhD researcher at the Institute for Design Innovation under the supervision of Erik Bohemia and Kerry Harman. Her interests are the design process as a social practice and agency within the design process. Under the research title “Rethinking design practice: Designers and agency in designing the user experience” she is directing the lens of theories of social practice onto the relationship between design(er) and use(r), investigating the interactions between people and the material in the design process, and the implications thereof for a world of increasing emphasis on designing for behaviour change. She draws from over a decade of designing for user experience of digital technology, amongst those citizen engagement solutions for local government and smart meter technology, after years of focus on photography and the construction of digital image realities. She holds a Magistra Artium degree in Painting and Graphic Art from the University of Fine Arts Vienna.
