Why did you choose to study at Loughborough University London?

There were two main factors strengthened by two additional factors.

The main factors were a master’s course in Entrepreneurship – something I was really searching for – and a course at a high quality top ten university.

In addition, the University offered me a scholarship, and had just opened situated very close to my home.

How has the University inspired you and helped you to progress in your career?

I’ve wanted to start my own business because of the freedom it offers. Previously I regarded myself as institutionalised into the employee system/mentality having worked for 4 years.

I was unable to think as an entrepreneur, being uncomfortable with risk, change, instability and no structure. Through my time at Loughborough University London I’ve managed to shift my mindset, now viewing the above as potential for opportunities. The University helped build my resilience, courage and confidence to leave a safe corporate career to start out and struggle on my own.

What did you think of the course content at Loughborough University London?

Whilst some modules covered general topics, there were other modules like Entrepreneurship that really opened my mind to the different entrepreneurial possibilities and probabilities.

The Collaborative Project was genuinely very challenging, but once completed, left me with a great sense of growth and achievement.

What were your favourite modules?

In addition to the above mentioned, the module on funding was also a favourite. It was very practical, and it showed me how to get what I may need – investor money! Similar to the Collaborative Project, there were lots of opportunities to present, greatly helping to improve my skills and overcome my fears.

Would there be one piece of advice that you would give to current or prospective students looking to study the same course that you did?

Take part in all the extra-curricular enterprise societies and activities the University runs – they’re what will truly open your mind and improve your entrepreneurial skills (if that’s your goal).

How did your postgraduate and undergraduate experiences differ?

A big part of the experience depends on students themselves. For me, I was motivated, interested and engaged both academically and with extra-curricular societies during my postgraduate degree – something I wasn’t during my undergraduate. This made a big difference.

Did you take part in any extra-curricular activities during your studies? If so, how did this impact upon your Loughborough experience?

Yes – this was what brought university to life for me!

I was on the 4-person Enterprise Committee and took part in all the enterprise events. The Enterprise team put on some great masterclasses giving us a glimpse of what it really takes to be an entrepreneur.

Can you tell us about your career journey so far? Where are you working now?

I started off working in accounting (carrying on from my undergraduate degree) and then moved into data, business and product analysis at the Cabinet Office after two and a half years. In total I amassed just under 4 years working experience.

Since graduating with my master’s degree, I’ve chosen to struggle for a while to make my entrepreneurial dreams work. I’m working part-time side jobs in tuition and customer service, whilst trying and testing out different business ideas and models.

What do you love the most about your job?

What I love most is the freedom it offers. I love the responsibility I put on myself. These loves are double-edged swords, also being frightening in that everything rests on me.

What does the future hold for you?

This is both the scary and exciting thing – I genuinely don’t know! Now that I’ve taken the entrepreneurial leap, my plan is to keep working hard, experimenting and see where life leads me.
