Loughborough named best in the UK for student experience

Loughborough University has been named the best in the country for its student experience, the UK’s leading publication on higher education, the Times Higher Education (THE) announced today.

This is the eighth time it has topped the annual Student Experience Survey since its inception in 2006, and its 11th appearance in the top ten.

The survey is based on the views of around 20,000 students from across the UK on 22 core aspects of student life, from wellbeing and support to social life and teaching quality.

As well as claiming the overall top spot, Loughborough was ranked number one in four categories: Good community atmosphere; Good extra-curricular activities; Good environment on campus/around university; and High quality facilities. It is also the university that students are most likely to recommend to their friends.

Commenting on Loughborough’s achievement, Professor Robert Allison, the University’s Vice-Chancellor, said: “I am incredibly proud that yet again Loughborough University has been named the best in the country for its student experience.

“What we offer at Loughborough is truly unique, bringing together the highest quality teaching and support, opportunities for the development of employability skills, a wide range of extra-curricular activities, and world-class facilities. Everyone at the University works together to ensure the Loughborough student journey is the very best it can be, and to have this recognised again by the THE is fantastic.”

George Etherington, President of Loughborough Students’ Union, added: “When students come to Loughborough we want them to have the experience of a lifetime, in all areas of their university life. This award from the THE shows that we are doing just that, offering our students an outstanding university experience, and I’m thrilled that Loughborough has once again taken the top spot.”

THE Special Reports Editor, Sara Custer, said: “Our results confirm that what matters to students during this all-important time in their life is pretty simple: good classes taught by good lecturers and the opportunity to make friends.

“Our top-ranked universities have told us that the secret to their repeated success is shifting the focus towards students. Including their opinions in every institution-wide decision has made the institutions a place where students feel empowered and where their needs are being met.”
