Dr Steve Swanson

Dr Steve Swanson is an experienced manager in a variety of international sport settings. As a lecturer in sport business, Steve teaches in several areas relating to leadership and management in sport. His research explores key aspects of organisational behaviour such as leadership, culture, change management, and employee commitment.

As Programme Director for MSc Sport Leadership, Steve teaches a variety of sport leadership and business modules in the Institute for Sport Business. With more than a decade of managerial experience in a variety of organisations, his research interests include leadership, sport management, organisational behaviour, and employee attitudes in sport. Steve has also been a successful basketball coach at numerous levels, including the British Basketball League in the United Kingdom.

Academic background

Prior to Loughborough University London Steve taught in the Sport Management programmes at the University of Worcester and Temple University. Within those roles Steve has delivered modules in a variety of different subject areas, including: leadership, sport management, strategy, human resource management, sponsorship and fundraising, event management, research methods, and social issues in sport.

  • Mr Peter Sear. Empathy and Leadership: Should we be selecting and nurturing empathetic leaders in sport?
  • Mr Tain Lin. The differences between leadership characteristics within a Asian sport context societies and its implications for leadership practice

Interests and activities

Steve has been a successful basketball coach in various settings including the UK’s British Basketball League.
